Renewal Rituals of Springtime
Boy oh boy, could we use a full-On Gonzo life-saving springtime renewal right about now or what! And I’m not just talking about wrapping up the brutal winter season and getting over those bone chilling, cold winter blues. Nosireebob, I’m talking about a deep, desperate need and craving to escape ever increasing damaging forces much worse than Old Man Winter here.
In many regions of the country many are still facing a month or more of real honest-to-God winter conditions, but here at our home in Texas, we literally went from a recent subzero arctic freezeblast to 70 plus degree sunshine in less than a week. So, round these here parts a refreshing spring upgrade is in the air and we are raring to kickstart the season of renewal with a much welcomed earth-shattering bang.
The world gets goofier and scarier everyday in 2021, so thank God almighty we in the hunting world are smart enough to plunge spirit-first into the glorious healing powers of nature as the cleansing forces of springtime come on stronger everyday.
You know the routine; reviewing all our deerhunting gear and begin the prep for a new hunting year. Scouting our deergrounds to discover trails and game activity more apparent on springtime bare earth. Searching for shed antlers. Scouting for turkey roosts and ambush setups. Cleaning out the tackle box and checking fishing pole lines and condition. Sprucing up the 3D archery range and setting up new clever scenarios. Identifying and prepping ground for spring foodplot plantings. Maybe do some timber review, hinge cutting and overall management. Time to plant some groundcover-thermal cover coniferous edges and maybe even some mast and fruit trees while creating some rabbit brushpiles. Planning some spring and summer bear hunting. Getting after some spring bushytails. Getting out the varmint calls for some fun and always exciting predator control.
And hallelujah of hallelujahs, the never ending exotic big game hunting in my homestate of Texas literally never ends.
And of course, though certainly not restricted by any means to a springtime ritual, now is as good a time as ever to make than phonecall and Email to your mayor, senator, congressman and game department head to drive home your observations and sound science based directions and demands to improve hunting opportunities in our states and regions. And believe you me, there is not a state or region that doesn’t beg for such upgrades, and we all know what they are.
I pretty much do all the above each and every day no matter what, and I go to bed each night rather satisfied or at the very least gratified that I did my part to keep the conservation lifestyle throttling along to the absolute best of my ability.
House-cleaning in all its various forms is always a good idea this time of year, and I’m really going for it like never before.
I am actually holding a quite extensive auction of my lifetime accumulation of the coolest rifles, shotguns, handguns, amazing guitars, historical bows, outrageous rock-n-roll memorabilia and assorted unique Nugent goodies to simplify and streamline my life as I enter my 73rd year.
You’ve got to see this catalog of stuff to believe it!
You can witness it all online and actually bid on everything if you so desire at Tednugentauction.com, or Burleyauction.com.
We will hold the auction at Tucker Hall in Waco, Texas March 26 and 27, but online bidders are already going crazy to get a crack at a long list of one-of-a-kind firearms and stuff.
Believe me when I tell you that I am hanging on to my favorite 100 guns, most beloved 50 guitars and a plethora of accumulated stuff that still qualifies as borderline hording!
Being that as it may, the deerseason is over, a new year springs forth all around us, and hope and anticipation is in the air.
Put together your own list of fun spring rituals to pursue with family and friends. Such activity keeps the hunt spirit alive and takes our minds off so much unpleasantness that we all need to get away from.
Before you know it, spring will have sprung, summertime blues will pulsate along, and before you know it, the dynamo of fall will be with us.
I have my work cut out for me, and I hope you all celebrate these stimulating seasonal changes as much as I do.
